Joe started photographing landscapes at the age of ten using a Kodak Pony Camera which allowed for adjustment of shutter speed, aperture, and depth of field.
After graduating from college in 1963 with a degree in geological engineering, Joe spent the next 27 years exploring for oil and natural gas all over the world with nature photography as a serious avocation. During this period, Joe learned many of the fine points of nature photography in local camera clubs and the Photographic Society of America. Three different years in the 1980s Joe was ranked #1 in the world in nature print competitions sanctioned by the Photographic Society of America.
In 1990, Joe left the petroleum industry to make photography his vocation as well as his avocation. He and his wife Bonnie founded Dramatic Light Nature Photography, and, in the past 23 years, have led more than 200 photographic workshops world wide. In 1998, Joe authored a book entitled - How to Photograph Landscapes - published by Stackpole Books.
